CEOs have coaches

Actually you as electrical engineers, and technical managers should have coaches.
Enjoy and be well.

Athletes and CEOs have coaches... why not you?
**Steven Cerri

Athletes and CEOs have coaches. Why don't aeronautical engineers, electrical engineers, and technical managers have coaches? Actually you should.

At certain points in our engineering careers, we all need a coach, someone on the outside to advise us, to guide us past the obstacles, over the gaps in our learning.

Once you've decided to be coached, what kind of coaching do you sign up for?

There are three types of coaching you can get. Only one type will you find here.

Coaching Type #1 (Standard Coaching): This type of coaching assumes that answers exist in the clients' mind and that the client is somehow "blocked" from accessing their own inner knowledge. The coach merely "holds the space" for the client to find his or her own path. I don't do that kind of coaching. It's better done by a therapist, and I'm not a therapist and I don't do therapy.

Coaching Type #2 (Expert Coaching): This type of coaching assumes that the client wants answers to questions and the coach has those answers. This approach may work when it comes to technical questions, but this approach is insufficient when it comes to interpersonal issues of communication, leadership, management, and people skills. I could do this but I don't. It doesn't get the results my clients are looking for.

Coaching Type #3 (Expert Facilitator Coaching): This type of coaching assumes that the client wants answers to questions AND wants to be capable and competent in implementing those answers. This type of coaching requires not only knowledge about management, communication, and engineering work environments, but also an inordinate amount of knowledge and understanding of what it takes to be an engineer and technical manager and what it takes to make the transition to competence in people skills. This is what I do as a coach. This is what my clients want from me as a coach. And nine times out of ten, we get it.
