Proactive

Proactively adaptive people who thrive during times of change are those who are able to quickly read the new terrain before it causes problems, assess the new needs of the organization as it pertains to their function, and adapt their role to take advantage of that change.

Proactive Adaptation

This is a bit of a embryonic thought, so it may seem a little oblique. Please bear with me.

In the current economic situation, chances are good that your company and job will change dramatically during the next 15 months. Especially if you're in the Internet space, media, advertising, or any number of other volatile industries.

Adaptability is a highly valuable strength for people in these volatile industries.

But there are levels of adaptability, it seems. There are the non-adaptable people, of course. The ones who gripe more than they deal. Those are the people that will be shed when the time comes to remove some chairs from the office.

Then there are the generally adaptive people. These people cheerfully stay open to newness, take on new responsibilities as situations require, and shed responsibilities that no longer seem to have significant value to the organization. But to a large extent, this kind of adaptation is reactive based on the observation of negative consequences of NOT adapting and motivated by the need to regain stability.

Then there are proactively adaptive people. People who thrive during times of change are those who are able to quickly read the new terrain before it causes problems, assess the new needs of the organization as it pertains to their function, and adapt their role to take advantage of that change. Perhaps they are even able to read the terrain so well that they can see where the company is headed and embrace that.

Of course, this level of adaptation requires high high degree of visibility. It might be hard in some organizations to have this level of visibility. Perhaps it would be wise for companies who actually do know where they are going (and I realize that the role-call of those companies is someone short) to provide employees with the visibility so that they can help envision how the change should manifest in their area. That way the entire organism can adjust sort of simultaneously and proactively.
